System panics when trying to start a large (1 TB) volume when running a campus cluster configuration.


Details:

The panic can occur when Volume Manager needs to handle FastResync instant snapshot operations on large volumes and insufficient memory is allocated to the Volume Manager paging module for the required operations.  

Workaround:

For a volume 1 TB in size, increase the "volpagemod_max_memsz" parameter to 64 MB in order to allocate enough memory for the paging module before attaching the site and starting the volume.  

1. Change "volpagemod_max_memsz" online temporarily with the following command (notice the :value is followed by a "k"):

# vxtune volpagemod_max_memsz 65536k

2. To make the change permanent across reboots, add the following entry to the /etc/vx/vxvm_tunables file by running the following command (notice the value is NOT followed by a "k"):

# vxvoltune volpagemod_max_memsz 65536

Volume Manager checks the entries in /etc/vx/vxvm_tunables during a reboot and sets the values accordingly.

You can check the value of "volpagemod_max_memsz" after rebooting by running the vxtune command. Notice that the vxtune command will list several Volume Manager tunables.  Be sure to check the value of the "volpagemod_max_memsz" tunable  Here is a sample listing from the vxtune command..

vol_min_lowmem_sz            4096       Low Memory Threshold (Kbytes)

volpagemod_max_memsz        65536       Cache Size for FMR Metadata (Kbytes)

Note:  For volumes larger that 1 TB, "volpagemod_max_memsz" must be set to a larger value.  If there are multiple large volumes, each volume will require its own buffer space.   Please consult the Veritas Volume Manager Administrator's Guide for additional information on setting an appropriate value of "volpagemod_max_memsz".
